Deputy Senate President to Trump: Withdraw Your Threat, Apologise Now!

Deputy Senate President, Senator Barinada Mpigi, has issued a stern warning to former U.S. President Donald Trump, demanding an immediate withdrawal of his recent remarks perceived as a threat to Nigeria’s sovereignty.

Mpigi, speaking at the National Assembly in Abuja on Friday, described Trump’s statement — which allegedly questioned Nigeria’s internal security policies and hinted at possible sanctions — as “reckless and diplomatically offensive.”

He urged the U.S. government to distance itself from the comment, emphasizing that Nigeria would not tolerate any interference in its domestic affairs. “Nigeria is a sovereign nation. We will not bow to threats, no matter where they come from,” Mpigi declared.

The lawmaker also called on President Bola Tinubu to summon the U.S. ambassador for clarification and warned that such utterances could strain Nigeria–U.S. relations if not promptly addressed. “Trump must apologise to Nigerians. We value friendship, not intimidation,” he added.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have backed the Senate’s stance, urging the federal government to adopt a firm diplomatic response.
