Deputy Senate President to Trump: Withdraw Your Threat, Apologise Now!
Deputy Senate President, Senator Barinada Mpigi, has issued a stern warning to former U.S. President Donald Trump, demanding an immediate withdrawal of his recent remarks perceived as a threat to Nigeriaâs sovereignty.
Mpigi, speaking at the National Assembly in Abuja on Friday, described Trumpâs statement â which allegedly questioned Nigeriaâs internal security policies and hinted at possible sanctions â as âreckless and diplomatically offensive.â
He urged the U.S. government to distance itself from the comment, emphasizing that Nigeria would not tolerate any interference in its domestic affairs. âNigeria is a sovereign nation. We will not bow to threats, no matter where they come from,â Mpigi declared.
The lawmaker also called on President Bola Tinubu to summon the U.S. ambassador for clarification and warned that such utterances could strain NigeriaâU.S. relations if not promptly addressed. âTrump must apologise to Nigerians. We value friendship, not intimidation,â he added.
Meanwhile, civil society groups have backed the Senateâs stance, urging the federal government to adopt a firm diplomatic response.
