PDP Crisis: 3,000 Delegates Set for High-Stakes Convention
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing for a make-or-break national convention, with over 3,000 delegates expected to participate amid deepening internal rifts. The convention, scheduled to hold in Abuja, is expected to address key leadership disputes, zoning controversies, and reconcile warring factions threatening the unity of the opposition party.
According to sources within the partyâs National Working Committee (NWC), the convention will feature elections into strategic positions, including the National Chairman and National Secretary roles, which have been at the center of recent conflicts. Party stakeholders from across the six geopolitical zones have been lobbying intensely, with some governors pushing for a total overhaul of the party structure.
Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Governor Douye Diri, and other top PDP figures are reportedly working behind the scenes to ensure a peaceful and transparent process that could reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections. Security has also been beefed up at the venue, as the NWC vowed to prevent any form of disruption.
Analysts believe the outcome of the convention will determine whether the PDP can remain a viable opposition or further descend into factional disarray.
