Christian Genocide: PFN, Islamic Council in Verbal Crossfire

Tensions flared on Sunday as the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN) and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) engaged in a heated exchange over allegations of a “Christian genocide” in parts of the country.

The PFN accused government security agencies of ignoring targeted attacks against Christians in northern and Middle Belt regions, describing the incidents as “systematic ethnic and religious cleansing.” PFN National President, Bishop Wale Oke, urged President Bola Tinubu to intervene decisively to prevent further bloodshed and ensure justice for victims.

In response, the NSCIA dismissed the PFN’s claims as “incendiary and divisive,” warning religious leaders against making statements that could worsen national unity. The council’s spokesperson, Prof. Ishaq Oloyede, maintained that the violence in several communities stemmed from banditry and communal disputes rather than religious persecution.

Both religious bodies have called for peace and dialogue, but mutual distrust persists amid escalating insecurity across the nation. Observers warn that such exchanges could deepen sectarian divides if not carefully managed by both faith leaders and the government.
