30 Years After Execution, Nigeria Still Awaits Justice for Ogoni Nine – Global Rights
Global Rights, a human rights advocacy group, has lamented Nigeria’s continued failure to deliver justice for the Ogoni Nine, three decades after their execution. The group marked the 30th anniversary of the 1995 killing of Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni activists, calling for renewed accountability over the state-sanctioned executions under the military regime of late General Sani Abacha.
According to Global Rights, the Nigerian government has yet to prosecute those responsible for the human rights violations against the Ogoni community or provide adequate compensation to their families. The group also urged the federal government to implement the UNEP report on Ogoniland and ensure environmental restoration in the Niger Delta.
The statement emphasized that genuine justice for the Ogoni Nine would symbolize Nigeria’s commitment to human rights and environmental justice, while reminding authorities that impunity only deepens mistrust between citizens and the state.
