“PDP Governors Close Ranks in Ibadan Amid INEC Boycott Threat Ahead of National Convention”

As the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) gears up for its highly anticipated national convention scheduled for November 15–16 in Ibadan, Oyo State, four key PDP governors have flown into the city to underscore a show of unity — even as the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has signaled it may boycott the event.

According to sources, the governors’ presence is part of concerted efforts to project strength and consensus, particularly after weeks of legal wrangling and internal party tension. The Oyo State High Court recently cleared the PDP to hold its elective national convention, ordering INEC to send monitors and observers to ensure transparency.

But trouble is brewing. A Federal High Court in Abuja has restrained INEC from supervising, monitoring, or recognizing the outcome of any convention convened by the PDP, citing due-process lapses in the party’s timetable and internal regulations.

Inside the PDP, rival camps are trading barbs. A Board of Trustees (BoT) reconciliation panel backed by Senator Adolphus Wabara has recommended suspending the convention altogether, warning that a flawed process could cripple the party ahead of the 2027 elections. Meanwhile, a faction loyal to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike is calling for a boycott, arguing that unresolved court orders render the Ibadan gathering illegitimate.

Despite the threats, the four PDP governors (including Adamawa’s Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri and Plateau’s Caleb Mutfwang) vowed in a meeting in Abuja to ensure a fair, transparent, and credible contest. Fintiri, who chairs the PDP National Convention Organising Committee, later led a delegation to Ibadan to assess venue readiness, commending Oyo Governor Seyi Makinde’s “readiness and organisational excellence.”

As tension mounts, the PDP insists the convention will go ahead “no matter the noise,” framing it as a defining moment for the party’s renewal.
