Abuja Face-off: Wike Allies & Military Veterans Clash Over Calls for Sanctions

A heated confrontation in Abuja saw FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and soldiers spar over access to a disputed land in the Gaduwa district. Wike accused the military presence of assisting illegal development, claiming the plot lacked proper documentation.

In a widely circulated video, the minister lashes out at a naval officer, calling him “a fool” and warning against intimidation by uniformed personnel. Wike insists his actions were rooted in upholding the law and not personal vendetta, reaffirming his commitment to enforcing Abuja’s land-use regulations.

A coalition of military veterans has strongly condemned Wike’s outburst. They argue that his language disrespects the dignity of public institutions and demands a public apology. They also warned that any attempt to penalize the officer involved could lead to more serious protests—from veterans threatening to occupy Wike’s ministry to widespread backlash.

Meanwhile, the Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has defended the soldier’s actions, stating that no officer on “lawful duty” will be punished over the incident. He affirmed the government’s commitment to protecting those serving legitimately.

Wike, however, denies any rift with the military, declaring his respect for the armed forces and emphasizing that his fight is against land grabbing — not against soldiers.
