Govs Revolt as Wike’s Expulsion Deepens Rift in PDP

A fresh crisis is engulfing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after its national convention in Ibadan saw the expulsion of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, former Ekiti Governor Ayodele Fayose, and several other senior members for alleged “anti-party activities.” The motion was carried unanimously, provoking sharp backlash from key state governors.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State disavowed the expulsion, calling it “not in the best interest of the party” and warning that it could plunge the PDP into irreversible crisis. He stressed the need for peace and reconciliation, rejecting what he termed a move that could lead to the party’s disintegration.

Similarly, Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State distanced himself from the decision, saying the motion was neither discussed in the PDP Governors’ Forum nor at the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC). Mutfwang described the expulsions as poorly timed and cautioned that the action could exacerbate existing divisions rather than heal them.

The unfolding rebellion by these governors underscores a broader power struggle within the PDP, rooted in long-standing grievances over exclusion and internal marginalisation. Wike, for his part, has accused other PDP governors of sidelining him and warned that their conduct threatens the very survival of the party.

The tension comes amid calls for greater inclusivity within the party, with dissenters urging for dialogue and strategic engagement rather than punitive measures. As rifts deepen, the PDP faces a critical decision point: reconcile internally or risk long-term fragmentation.
