“Today is your last day!”: How bandits killed vice principal, abducted 25 students in Kebbi school raid

In the pre-dawn hours of Monday, November 17 2025, a well-armed gang of bandits struck the dormitory of Government Girls Comprehensive Senior Secondary School, Maga in the Danko/Wasagu local government area of Kebbi State, north-western Nigeria.

Around 4:00 a.m., the attackers arrived on motorcycles, scaled the school fence and engaged the on-site police tactical unit in gunfire. They first burst into the residence of the school’s vice principal, Hassan Yakubu Makuku, who also served as the chief security officer. Confronting him, the assailants reportedly told him: “Today is your last day.” After a brief plea, Makuku was shot dead in his home.

With the vice principal dead, the attackers forced his young daughter to lead them to the students’ hostel. There they abducted 25 female boarders from their dormitory and withdrew swiftly into the forested escape routes. Another staff member, the security guard Ali Shehu, sustained injuries during the raid.

No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but security analysts say that criminal bandit gangs in north-west Nigeria—often former herders turned kidnappers-for-ransom—are likely suspects.

In response, the federal government and Kebbi state authorities launched a large-scale rescue effort. The Nigerian Army’s Chief of Army Staff, Waidi Shaibu, visited the crisis zone and ordered relentless day-and-night operations to track the bandits through nearby forests, patrol major escape routes and recover the students.

The abduction has reignited fears across Nigeria, where the kidnapping of schoolchildren has become a tragically recurring threat, particularly in the north. Officials and parents alike are calling for urgent reform of school security, better community vigilance and stronger accountability for known perpetrators.
