US Envoy, Nicki Minaj Decry Killings in Nigeria

At a U.S.-hosted United Nations event, rapper Nicki Minaj delivered a powerful address condemning the rising violence against Christians in Nigeria. Invited by U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Michael Waltz, Minaj highlighted the persecution of Christians—claiming they are being “targeted, driven from their homes and killed,” with churches burned and entire faith communities left in fear.

Minaj gave credit to former President Donald Trump, thanking him for raising awareness of what she described as an “existential threat” to Christianity in Nigeria—as Trump has called for possible military intervention if killings continue.

Waltz echoed her sentiments, praising her for using her global platform to spotlight this crisis. In a post, he called her “a principled individual who refuses to remain silent in the face of injustice.” Minaj, for her part, said she’s deeply honoured, viewing her influence as something “given by God
 for a bigger purpose.”

She made clear, however, that her advocacy “is not about taking sides or dividing people. It is about uniting humanity.”

The remarks come amid a heated debate: Trump has branded Nigeria a “Country of Particular Concern” over alleged mass killings of Christians, and warned of cutting U.S. aid if the violence continues. Meanwhile, critics in Nigeria — including some political figures — argue that the violence cannot be reduced to purely religious persecution, citing broader security challenges affecting all religions.
