Kidnapping crisis: Governors convene emergency session, school lockdowns rise

In response to a wave of school abductions across Nigeria, several state governors have convened an emergency security meeting to coordinate immediate action and preventive measures. Schools in vulnerable regions have been placed under lockdown or switched to day-only operations. For instance, in Papiri (Niger State), gunmen abducted dozens of students and teachers, prompting the governor to order closure of all primary and secondary schools statewide until further notice.

During the summit, governors emphasised that schools should no longer be sanctuaries for criminals, and called for increased intelligence-sharing, community vigilance, and rapid-response security teams. Military and police officials were directed to intensify patrols around school premises and forested areas prone to ambushes.

Meanwhile, parents and community leaders have raised alarm over the psychological and educational impact of sudden school lockdowns. Many students are now missing classes or forced into day schooling, undermining earlier gains in access to education. Experts warn that if the trend persists, the region could see a reversal in school-enrolment progress and a rise in out-of-school youths.

State authorities say the emergency session will yield a unified national strategy for securing educational institutions, including establishing safe-zone protocols, real-time alert systems, and possible relocation of schools from high-risk zones. The governors have pledged to submit a joint action plan to the federal government within the week.
