Hundreds Dead, Thousands Missing as Catastrophic Flooding Ravages South East Asia
Hundreds of people have been confirmed dead and thousands remain missing across South East Asia as some of the regionâs heaviest rainfall in decades unleashes catastrophic flooding, landslides and widespread destruction from Indonesia to Thailand, Malaysia and Sri Lanka.
In Indonesiaâs Sumatra Island, the death toll has surged past 300, with authorities warning that the figure could rise as dozens remain unaccounted for. Entire communities have been cut off, major roads have collapsed, and electricity and internet services are only partially restored. Emergency responders continue to battle through thick debris and treacherous floodwaters in search of survivors.
Officials say the flooding has been intensified by an exceptionally rare tropical system, Cyclone Senyar, which triggered massive landslides and submerged thousands of homes. In Aceh Province, residents say torrents of water arrived âwithin seconds,â swallowing houses whole and leaving families scrambling for safety.
Arini Amalia, a resident of Aceh, recounted how she escaped with her grandmother to higher ground, only to return and find their home completely swept away. Another survivor, Meri Osman from West Sumatra, said he was carried off by strong floodwaters and survived only by clinging to a clothesline.
Several others across Aceh told Reuters that their homes âcame downâ as water levels surged violently through their communities.
Authorities across the region are urging residents to evacuate vulnerable areas as search and rescue teams race against time, hampered by damaged infrastructure and continued heavy rainfall. International aid groups are monitoring the situation as fears of further landslides and disease outbreaks grow.
