Five Ambassadorial Nominees Haunted by Past Controversies
—Fresh Scrutiny as Senate Begins Screening

Nigeria’s diplomatic circle is tense as five ambassadorial nominees face renewed scrutiny over past controversies ahead of Senate screening. Although the Presidency has defended the selections as “strategic and merit-based,” civil society groups and opposition lawmakers insist that several nominees carry unresolved baggage that could undermine Nigeria’s image abroad.

According to parliamentary sources, the first nominee on the list is accused of mismanaging public funds during his tenure as a state commissioner, an allegation that resurfaced after an anti-graft organisation petitioned the Senate Committee on Foreign Affairs. Another nominee, a retired diplomat, is being probed over claims of favouritism and document tampering linked to a previous posting.

A third nominee, who served as a political adviser, is facing allegations of involvement in a controversial contract award five years ago, though he maintains the claims are politically motivated. The fourth, a former local government chairman, has been criticised for his role in a violent political clash that occurred under his administration. The fifth nominee has come under fire for dual citizenship concerns and questions about eligibility under Nigerian constitutional provisions.

Despite the mounting concerns, insiders say the Presidency is confident the Senate will approve the list, arguing that none of the allegations has resulted in a conviction or formal sanction.

The Senate is expected to intensify vetting this week, with civil society organisations calling for transparent, merit-based assessments. As scrutiny grows, Nigerians await whether the screening will clear the air—or deepen doubts about the integrity of the nation’s diplomatic appointments.
