US Accuses Rwanda of Fueling Renewed Conflict in Eastern DR Congo, Warns of Consequences
The United States has accused Rwanda of fueling renewed instability and war in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), warning that continued advances by the Rwanda-backed M23 rebel group could derail fragile peace efforts in the region.
Addressing the United Nations Security Council on Friday, US Ambassador Mike Waltz said Rwandaâs actions were pushing the Great Lakes region toward deeper conflict. He warned that Washington would not stand by while peace is undermined, stressing that the United States would use âthe tools at our disposal to hold to account spoilers to peace.â
The latest territorial gains by the M23 rebels have triggered widespread alarm, with fighting moving dangerously close to Burundiâs border. The escalating violence has raised fears of a broader regional war involving multiple neighboring countries.
Since January, renewed clashes in eastern Congo have reportedly killed thousands of people and displaced hundreds of thousands, further worsening an already severe humanitarian crisis marked by food shortages, insecurity, and mass displacement.
Burundi also issued a strong warning at the Security Council. Its UN Ambassador, Zephyrin Maniratanga, cautioned that continued attacks and cross-border tensions could spark a direct confrontation between Burundi and Rwanda. He said Burundiâs restraint was ânearing its limitâ as security threats along its border intensify.
The situation underscores growing international concern that the conflict in eastern Congo could spiral into a wider regional war if urgent diplomatic and security measures are not taken.
