Dangote Expands Allegations Against NMDPRA Chief Executive, Raises Fresh Regulatory Concerns

Aliko Dangote has expanded his allegations against the Chief Executive of the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), escalating tensions between Africa’s richest businessman and Nigeria’s petroleum regulator. Dangote, through officials of the Dangote Group, accused the regulator’s leadership of actions and decisions he claims are undermining fair competition and distorting the downstream petroleum market.

According to the Dangote Group, certain regulatory approvals and policy directions allegedly favour vested interests and pose obstacles to the efficient operation of the $20bn Dangote Petroleum Refinery. The company argued that inconsistent enforcement of standards, import permits, and pricing frameworks could discourage local refining and contradict the Federal Government’s drive for energy self-sufficiency.

While expanding the allegations, Dangote called for greater transparency, regulatory accountability, and adherence to rules that promote local production. He urged the authorities to investigate the claims objectively to protect investors and sustain confidence in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector.

In response, NMDPRA officials have maintained that the authority operates strictly within the law, insisting that all regulatory actions are guided by national interest, market stability, and consumer protection. The regulator reiterated its commitment to fairness and due process, noting that no company is targeted or favoured.

The development has sparked renewed debate within industry circles over regulatory independence, market dominance, and the balance between private investment and public oversight in Nigeria’s energy sector.
