CBCN Laments Hardship, Insecurity; Offers Message of Hope to Nigerians at Christmas
The Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN) has said Nigeria is suffering deep wounds caused by economic hardship, widespread insecurity, displacement, and persistent violence, leaving many citizens fearful, weary, and uncertain about the future.
The bishops noted that families across the country have been torn apart, livelihoods disrupted, and countless lives lost to lawlessness and instability, describing the current situation as a heavy burden on the nation’s collective soul.
In “A Message of Hope for Nigerians at Christmas”, the President of the CBCN and Archbishop of Owerri, Most Rev. Lucius Ugorji, said Nigeria yearns for a future where integrity triumphs over corruption and violence gives way to lasting peace and security.
Archbishop Ugorji stressed that despite the nation’s challenges, Christmas remains a powerful reminder of hope, faith, and divine presence in times of suffering.
“At Christmas, the Church proclaims the truth upon which all Christian hope rests: the Word became flesh and dwelt among us,” the message read. “God did not respond to the brokenness of the world with distance or indifference. He responded by drawing near.”
According to the CBCN president, the birth of Jesus Christ signifies God’s solidarity with humanity, noting that through humility and vulnerability, God entered human history, embraced human suffering, and chose presence over abandonment.
“In Jesus Christ, God is Emmanuel — God-with-us,” Ugorji said, urging Nigerians not to lose hope but to remain steadfast in faith, unity, and the pursuit of justice and peace.
The bishops encouraged leaders at all levels to act with compassion, responsibility, and integrity, while calling on citizens to support one another and work collectively toward healing the nation’s wounded.
