PDP Crisis Deepens as Wike, Makinde Remain Adamant Despite INEC’s Intervention
The internal crisis rocking the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has further deepened as key party leaders, Nyesom Wike and Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde, remain unmoved despite efforts by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to restore order.
Sources within the party say INEC’s recent intervention, aimed at ensuring compliance with electoral guidelines and party constitution, has failed to break the deadlock between rival factions. The standoff is reportedly linked to disputes over party leadership structure, congress outcomes, and control of key organs ahead of future elections.
Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and a former Rivers State governor, is said to be maintaining his hardline position, insisting on what his camp describes as fairness, inclusion, and respect for agreements reached during previous reconciliatory talks. Similarly, Makinde, who is seen as a leading figure among PDP governors, has continued to back positions that clash with the opposing bloc, further widening internal divisions.
Party insiders warn that the prolonged impasse could weaken the PDP’s opposition role and affect its preparedness for upcoming elections if urgent consensus is not reached. Calls are now mounting for fresh reconciliation efforts involving elders of the party, as well as stricter enforcement of party rules to avert a possible fragmentation.
