Christmas: Tinubu, Governors Call for Unity as NLC Rejects Unfair Taxation

President Bola Tinubu and several state governors used their Christmas messages to urge Nigerians to embrace unity, tolerance and shared sacrifice as the country navigates economic reforms and security challenges.

Tinubu praised the resilience of citizens and encouraged renewed faith in the nation’s future, saying peace, compassion and community spirit remain essential for development. Governors across the federation echoed similar sentiments, appealing for patriotism, inter-religious harmony and support for government initiatives aimed at stability and growth.

However, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) cautioned that national appeals must be matched with fair economic policies. The union rejected what it described as “unjust and burdensome taxation,” insisting that workers and the poor cannot continue to shoulder the weight of reforms without living-wage protections and targeted social relief.

The NLC urged government at all levels to consult labour and civil society before introducing new revenue measures, noting that Christmas should inspire justice, empathy and policies that protect vulnerable households.

As celebrations continue nationwide, leaders called on citizens to uphold love, charity and solidarity — values they believe can guide Nigeria toward a safer and more prosperous new year.
