US launches deadly strikes against Islamic State in Nigeria, says Trump

The United States has carried out precision airstrikes targeting Islamic State–aligned militants in northern Nigeria, President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday.
According to U.S. officials, the operation was coordinated with Nigerian security forces and focused on extremist cells believed to be responsible for cross-border attacks and ambushes against civilians and soldiers.

Pentagon sources said the strikes destroyed weapons depots, vehicles, and several militant hideouts. Nigerian military commanders described the mission as a “significant blow” to Islamic State affiliates operating around the Lake Chad basin, noting that surveillance drones helped minimize civilian casualties.

Trump stated that the U.S. remains committed to supporting regional partners confronting violent extremism, while stressing that Washington expects Nigeria to pair military pressure with humanitarian relief and stabilization efforts.

Security analysts warned, however, that the militants may attempt retaliatory attacks, urging both governments to strengthen border monitoring, intelligence sharing, and community-based counter-radicalization programs.

Officials said assessments of the operation are ongoing, and both nations pledged to deepen cooperation aimed at restoring long-term peace and security in affected communities.
