US Launches Airstrikes Against Islamic State Fighters in Northwest Nigeria
The United States has launched coordinated airstrikes targeting Islamic State (IS) fighters operating in northwest Nigeria, US President Donald Trump announced on Thursday, marking a significant escalation in efforts to counter extremist violence in the region.
In a statement posted on his Truth social media platform, President Trump described the airstrikes as “powerful and deadly,” saying they were aimed at Islamic State militants who, according to him, have been “targeting and viciously killing, primarily, innocent Christians” at levels not seen in many years.
Trump said the military action was carried out under his authority as Commander in Chief, stressing Washington’s continued commitment to confronting radical terrorism wherever it threatens lives and stability.
Confirming the operation, the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) disclosed that the airstrikes were conducted in coordination with Nigerian authorities in Sokoto State, northwest Nigeria. The command said the strikes resulted in the deaths of multiple Islamic State fighters, though specific casualty figures were not disclosed.
The development comes amid growing security concerns in parts of northern Nigeria, where armed groups, including jihadist factions and criminal gangs, have intensified attacks on civilians, communities, and security forces.
Nigerian authorities have yet to issue a detailed statement on the operation, but security analysts say the coordinated strikes underscore increasing international support for Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and violent extremism.
