Explosions Rock Offa on Christmas Night, Five Injured, Buildings Damaged
Explosions late on Christmas night rocked Offa, the headquarters of Offa Local Government Area in Kwara State, leaving at least five people injured and several buildings damaged, authorities have confirmed.
The incident occurred late on Thursday night, triggering widespread panic and fear among residents of the ancient town. According to eyewitness accounts, the explosions were loud and sudden, forcing many residents out of their homes in confusion and distress.
Five persons reportedly sustained serious injuries and were rushed to First Care Hospital, Offa, where they are currently receiving treatment.
A visit to the town on Friday revealed heightened anxiety, with residents recounting harrowing moments following the explosions. Among those injured were a woman popularly known as Iya Ayo and her daughter, Aisha, who neighbours said were asleep when the blast occurred.
âThey were already asleep when the explosion happened. Iya Ayoâs breast, stomach and arms were pierced by nails,â a resident told Nigeria TV Info.
Eyewitnesses also said an artisan sustained injuries in the incident, while at least four adjoining buildings suffered significant structural damage. Windows were shattered and walls cracked in several nearby houses.
A petty trader, Madam Joy, narrated that she saw a bright object moments before the explosion, adding to fears that the incident may have involved an explosive device.
As of the time of filing this report, security agencies had yet to issue an official statement on the cause of the explosions. Investigations are expected to be launched to determine the source and motive behind the incident, as residents call for increased security in the area.
