Ibadan Explosion: FG Released ₦30bn, Not ₦50bn to Oyo — Makinde’s Aide.
Ibadan, Nigeria — The Oyo State Government has clarified that the Federal Government released ₦30 billion — not ₦50 billion — as intervention support following the deadly January 2024 explosion in Ibadan’s Bodija area. The statement came from Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, Special Adviser on Media to Governor Seyi Makinde, in response to recent political claims and controversies.
Dr. Olanrewaju described allegations by former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Fayose — that Makinde received ₦50 billion from President Bola Tinubu — as “misleading and deliberately disingenuous.” He said only ₦30 billion was actually released by the federal government after the explosion, with the remaining ₦20 billion not disbursed due to issues related to alleged demands for inducements tied to the release process.
The Oyo government aide also challenged claims that Makinde hoarded funds for personal political ambitions, stating that the governor clearly denied receiving the ₦50 billion — a figure that Fayose insisted was supported by documents he shared. Fayose alleged only about ₦4.5 billion of the intervention was paid to victims, accusing Makinde of diverting the rest.
Meanwhile, political parties such as the All Progressives Congress (APC) have demanded that Governor Makinde account for how relief funds were used, asserting that the public deserves transparency over the supposed ₦50 billion package.
Makinde’s camp insists the focus remains on supporting victims and rebuilding Bodija, and has rebuffed the financial allegation amid ongoing political tensions.
