Kwankwaso Mulls Joining Atiku, Obi in ADC Alliance Ahead of 2027 Elections

Nigeria’s political terrain is witnessing a fresh realignment as Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, former governor of Kano State and national leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), is reportedly considering a strategic shift toward the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to join forces with former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar and ex-Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Sources close to the discussions say Kwankwaso is weighing an alliance with the opposition coalition under the ADC flag as defections and political repositioning intensify nationwide. This emerging possibility follows the notable defection of Obi — along with supporters and lawmakers — to the ADC, which is already home to prominent figures including Atiku, David Mark, Aminu Tambuwal, Emeka Ihedioha, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rotimi Amaechi.

The backdrop to these developments includes the defection of the Kano State governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, and most members of the Kano State House of Assembly to the All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting some political watchers to suggest Kwankwaso may view the ADC as a more suitable platform to maintain his influence and broaden his national relevance.

Analysts believe that an ADC alliance involving Kwankwaso, Atiku, and Obi — who together garnered significant votes in the 2023 election — could reshape the opposition’s electoral prospects and present a formidable challenge to the ruling APC. However, Kwankwaso’s final decision remains pending as negotiations continue amidst evolving political calculations.
