Nigeria Vows Stronger Action Against Insecurity Amid Trump Airstrike Warning
Abuja — Nigeria has pledged to intensify its fight against rising insecurity, reaffirming its commitment to protecting citizens as concerns grow over escalating threats across parts of the country.
The renewed pledge comes amid comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who warned that Washington could carry out further air strikes in Nigeria if attacks on Christians continue. The remarks have raised fresh questions about Nigeria’s security strategy and international engagement on the issue.
In an interview with The New York Times, President Trump said there could be additional U.S. strikes in Nigeria if Christians are killed in the West African nation. He made the statement while responding to questions about a reported U.S. military strike carried out on Christmas Day.
Nigerian authorities have previously rejected claims of systematic persecution of Christians, insisting that insecurity in the country affects communities across religious and ethnic lines. Officials maintain that the violence is driven largely by terrorism, banditry, and communal conflicts, rather than a targeted campaign against any single religious group.
Government sources say Nigeria is strengthening intelligence operations, improving inter-agency coordination, and expanding security deployments in volatile regions as part of a broader effort to curb attacks and restore public confidence.
While Washington has not announced any new military action, analysts say Trump’s comments underscore growing international attention on Nigeria’s security challenges, placing additional pressure on Abuja to deliver tangible improvements on the ground.
