Impeachment Storm in Rivers: Fubara Says No Notice as Two Lawmakers Pull Out
In a dramatic turn of events in Rivers State politics, Governor Siminalayi Fubara says he has still not received any formal impeachment notice from the Rivers State House of Assembly, even as impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy continue to unfold.
The impeachment process was launched when 27 lawmakers initiated a move to remove Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, over alleged gross misconduct. However, officials within Government House insist that the governor has not been formally served any impeachment notice, and remains focused on state affairs following his return from an overseas trip.
Adding fuel to the political fire, two pro-Wike lawmakers â Sylvanus Nwankwo (Minority Leader, Omuma) and Peter Abbey (Degema) â have withdrawn their support for the impeachment. At a press conference in Port Harcourt, they appealed to their colleagues to halt the impeachment process and explore dialogue and reconciliation to de-escalate the crisis. They urged lawmakers to âtemper justice with mercyâ, highlighting interventions by elders and respected leaders calling for restraint and peaceful resolution.
The appeal underscores growing divisions within the State Assembly and concerns that continued confrontation could deepen political instability in the oil-rich state. The lawmakers emphasized that, although constitutional breaches are alleged, peaceful negotiation remains preferable to impeachment.
As tension mounts, Fubaraâs camp remains defiant, yet attentive to calls for calm. The crisis is widely linked to ongoing political feuds between the governor and powerful figures within the Peopleâs Democratic Party, particularly former governor and current FCT Minister Nyesom Wike. Analyses suggest the situation will be a test of political reconciliation and the strength of constitutional processes in Nigeriaâs subânational governance
