Governors Budget ₦525bn for Security as Killings Spread Across States

State governors have collectively earmarked about ₦525 billion for security in their 2026 budgets amid rising killings, kidnappings and attacks across several parts of the country. The allocation, drawn from state budgets and security votes, reflects growing concern over worsening insecurity affecting rural communities, highways and urban centres.

The funds are expected to support logistics for security agencies, intelligence gathering, surveillance technology, recruitment and training of local security outfits, and collaboration with federal forces. Some states also plan to invest in drones, patrol vehicles, communication equipment and community policing structures to improve rapid response.

Governors, speaking through the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, said the scale of violence now poses a serious threat to economic activities, food production and social stability, making increased security spending unavoidable. However, civil society groups have urged greater transparency and measurable outcomes, warning that higher budgets alone will not end killings without accountability, coordination and justice for victims.
