US Envoy Confirms Planned Meeting With Putin as Washington Pushes Ukraine Peace Talks
Abuja â A United States special envoy has confirmed plans to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, as Washington intensifies diplomatic efforts to broker an end to the war in Ukraine.
US special envoy Steve Witkoff disclosed that he, alongside President Donald Trumpâs son-in-law, Jared Kushner, is scheduled to hold talks with President Putin on Thursday. The discussions are expected to focus on pathways to ending the nearly four-year-long conflict in Ukraine.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Witkoff said the diplomatic engagement would also include consultations with Ukrainian officials as part of a broader peace initiative.
âIâm hopeful that all meetings will go well on that subject. We need a peace,â Witkoff said.
According to the envoy, negotiations between Russia and Ukraine have made significant progress, with most elements of a proposed peace framework already agreed upon. He described the unresolved aspects as the final â10 per centâ of issues standing in the way of a comprehensive deal.
However, Ukrainian authorities have urged caution, noting that while they have accepted large parts of the proposed framework, critical matters remain unsettled. Chief among these is the highly sensitive issue of territory, which Kyiv insists must be resolved in a manner that safeguards Ukraineâs sovereignty and national integrity.
The planned Moscow talks come amid growing international pressure for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict, which has had far-reaching humanitarian, economic, and geopolitical consequences across Europe and beyond.
