Insecurity: Anxiety as NYSC Camps Open in High-Risk States
As National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camps reopen across Nigeria, growing insecurity in some states has triggered widespread anxiety among prospective corps members and their families. Reports of banditry, kidnapping, insurgency and communal clashes in parts of the North-West, North-Central and North-East have heightened fears about safety at camp locations and during interstate travel.
Parents and guardians have called on the Federal Government and NYSC management to strengthen security arrangements around camps, provide armed escorts on major routes, and improve intelligence coordination with local security agencies. Some corps members have reportedly requested redeployment to safer states, citing security concerns and poor emergency response systems.
NYSC officials, however, have assured stakeholders that adequate security measures are in place. According to the scheme, collaborations with the military, police, DSS and state governments have been intensified, with additional patrols, surveillance and access control introduced in sensitive locations. The management also advised corps members to adhere strictly to safety guidelines, avoid night travel, and promptly report suspicious activities.
Security experts warn that sustained protection of camps and corps members is critical to maintaining confidence in the national service programme. They urge authorities to prioritize early threat detection, improve camp infrastructure, and establish rapid response teams to address emergencies during the orientation exercise.
