Heavy Gunfire, Explosions Reported Near Niger’s Main Airport
Niamey, Niger — Sustained heavy gunfire and loud explosions were reported near Niger’s main international airport in the early hours of Thursday, sparking fear and confusion among residents in the capital, Niamey.
Eyewitnesses in neighbourhoods close to Diori Hamani International Airport said they heard intense bursts of gunfire along with multiple explosions shortly after midnight. The sounds reportedly lasted for nearly two hours, sending many residents indoors as uncertainty grew over the source of the disturbance.
Videos circulating on social media appear to show air defence systems firing at unidentified objects in the sky. However, these visuals have not been independently verified, and authorities have yet to confirm the exact nature of the incident.
Residents who spoke to AFP said the situation gradually calmed after the prolonged exchange of gunfire and blasts. While panic initially spread in surrounding communities, there were no immediate official reports of casualties or damage.
An official from Niger’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs later told Anadolu News Agency that the situation is now “under control” and urged the public to remain calm. No further details were provided regarding what triggered the overnight security scare.
Security analysts say the incident is likely to heighten tensions in the region, as Niger continues to face security challenges linked to armed groups and political instability.
Authorities are expected to release more information as investigations continue.
