FCT Workers Defy Wike’s Orders, Resume Strike Despite Court Ruling

Workers of the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) on Wednesday resumed their industrial action, defying directives by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to return to duty following a court order suspending the strike. The workers, operating under the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), said the appeal filed against the National Industrial Court’s injunction justified their decision to continue the strike.

The renewed strike led to low turnout at several FCTA offices, disrupting public services across Abuja. Union leaders maintained that key welfare demands, including outstanding entitlements and improved working conditions, remain unresolved. They accused the government of delaying negotiations and failing to fully implement previous agreements.

Reacting, Wike warned that disobedience to court orders carries consequences, stressing that the FCTA remains open to dialogue but will not tolerate what he described as intimidation or blackmail. He urged workers to respect the rule of law while talks continue.

Meanwhile, labour groups, including the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), have expressed support for the striking workers, intensifying the standoff between the unions and the FCT authorities. The situation remains tense as both sides await further legal and administrative decisions.
