Fraud and Conspiracy: Ex-Gov Sylva May Be Arraigned in Absentia

Former Bayelsa State Governor and ex-Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, may be arraigned in absentia over alleged fraud and conspiracy as security agencies intensify efforts to bring him to justice. Sources within anti-graft agencies disclosed that Sylva has failed to honour invitations for questioning following allegations of financial misconduct linked to oil sector transactions and refinery investment funds.

Investigators said a court-issued arrest warrant remains in force, while prosecutors are reviewing legal options to proceed with trial even in the defendant’s absence if he continues to evade appearance. Officials noted that international tracking mechanisms and inter-agency collaboration have been activated to locate Sylva, who is believed to be outside the country.

Meanwhile, Sylva’s aides have dismissed the allegations, insisting he is abroad for medical reasons and describing the case as politically motivated. Legal analysts, however, say arraignment in absentia, though rare, is possible under Nigerian law where a defendant deliberately avoids court processes. The case is expected to test the judiciary’s resolve on high-profile corruption prosecutions.
