Coup Attempt: I Was Targeted for Elimination, Says Defence Minister

Nigeria’s Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (retd.), has revealed that he was a prime target in the recently foiled coup plot allegedly involving serving and retired military officers. According to Musa, intelligence reports showed that the conspirators planned to arrest him and eliminate him if he resisted, as part of efforts to destabilise the government of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Speaking on the development, the Defence Minister said swift action by security agencies helped to uncover the plot before it could be executed. He praised the Armed Forces and intelligence community for acting professionally to safeguard democracy and national stability.

Musa further stated that the suspects have been placed under investigation and will face prosecution in line with military and civil laws. He dismissed the plotters as individuals bent on undermining constitutional order, stressing that Nigerians would not tolerate a return to military rule.

Security experts have described the attempted coup as a reminder of the need for continuous reforms within the military and stronger intelligence coordination. The Federal Government has assured citizens that measures are being intensified to prevent similar threats and maintain peace across the country.
