Ministry Blames Budget Delay as South Africa Cuts Nigerian Embassy Power Supply
The Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs has attributed the temporary disconnection of electricity at Nigeriaâs High Commission in Pretoria to delays in the release of budgetary allocations. South African municipal authorities reportedly cut power to the diplomatic mission over outstanding utility bills, sparking public concern and diplomatic attention.
According to officials, Nigeriaâs 2026 budget approval process is yet to be completed, delaying fund disbursement to foreign missions and affecting routine operational expenses such as electricity and maintenance. The ministry said the situation was administrative rather than diplomatic and assured that steps were taken immediately to resolve the matter.
The Nigerian government confirmed that it engaged the City of Tshwane authorities and the High Commission to settle the outstanding debt, leading to the restoration of power supply shortly after payment was made. Officials stressed that measures are being put in place to prevent a recurrence, including improved funding timelines and emergency operational buffers for overseas missions.
The incident has renewed calls for faster budget implementation and better financial planning for Nigeriaâs diplomatic posts, as stakeholders warn that disruptions at embassies can affect consular services, national image, and bilateral relations.
