Lagos Assembly Orders Immediate Halt to Makoko Demolitions Amid Rising Protests

The Lagos State House of Assembly has ordered the immediate suspension of ongoing demolitions in Makoko following widespread protests by residents and civil society groups. Lawmakers issued the directive after an emergency sitting, citing humanitarian concerns and the need to prevent further displacement of vulnerable communities.

The Assembly directed the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and relevant task forces to cease enforcement actions pending a comprehensive review of the redevelopment plan. It also mandated a joint committee to visit the affected areas, engage community leaders, and assess the extent of damage and relocation needs.

Protesters had earlier blocked major access routes around Makoko, accusing the government of failing to provide adequate notice, compensation, or resettlement alternatives. Rights groups warned that the demolitions could worsen urban poverty and homelessness if not handled with inclusive planning.

In response, Assembly leaders urged calm and assured residents that dialogue would be prioritized. They emphasized the need for a balanced approach that protects waterfront safety and urban renewal goals while safeguarding the rights and livelihoods of long-time residents.
