Senate: Real-Time Results Transmission Does Not Amount to E-Voting
The Nigerian Senate has clarified that the electronic transmission of election results should not be mistaken for electronic voting, stressing that both processes are distinct under the nationâs electoral framework.
Speaking during plenary, lawmakers explained that real-time transmission of results refers to the digital upload of polling unit outcomes to a central server after votes have been cast manually. They noted that this process enhances transparency and reduces manipulation but does not replace the traditional method of voting using ballot papers.
The clarification comes amid renewed public debate over electoral reforms and the role of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC). Some stakeholders had argued that adopting real-time transmission was equivalent to introducing full electronic voting. However, senators emphasized that electronic voting involves casting ballots digitally, either through machines or online platforms, which is not currently provided for in Nigeriaâs existing system.
Lawmakers reiterated their commitment to strengthening the electoral process while ensuring that reforms align with constitutional provisions and national security considerations. They also called for greater public enlightenment to prevent misinformation ahead of future elections.
Observers say the Senateâs position could shape ongoing legislative discussions aimed at improving credibility, transparency, and voter confidence in Nigeriaâs democratic system.
