Emergency Plenary: N’Assembly Moves to Shift Presidential Poll to Feb. 13, 2027

Abuja — Nigeria’s National Assembly has called an emergency plenary session for Tuesday, February 17, 2026, cutting short its recess to consider critical revisions to the 2027 general election calendar. The session, announced by the Clerk of the National Assembly, directs senators and members of the House of Representatives to return to plenary at 11:00 a.m. amid indications that lawmakers may revise the date set for the next presidential election.

Officials and insider sources say the extraordinary sitting is intended to review and potentially move the presidential poll from the originally scheduled February 20, 2027 to February 13, 2027, following concerns that the earlier date falls within the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, which could affect voter participation.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had announced the general election timetable in strict compliance with constitutional requirements, but backlash from Muslim groups, political figures, and civil society triggered calls for legislative intervention.

In addition to the date review, the emergency plenary is expected to tackle ongoing Electoral Act Amendment issues, including dispute over electronic result transmission—a matter that has already ignited protests and public debate. Civil society groups and labour unions have pressed for real‑time electronic transmission of votes, while the Senate has taken a cautious approach to its adoption.

Senate leadership says the emergency session is not only about dates, but about ensuring inclusive, credible participation by all Nigerians across faiths and regions. Observers note that any adjustment to the election timetable would require careful legislative backing and could redefine the dynamics of the 2027 polls.
