Aiyedatiwa vs Tunji-Ojo: Political Cold War Sparks Killings, Violence in Ondo

A deepening political rivalry between Lucky Aiyedatiwa and Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo has reportedly escalated tensions in Ondo State, triggering violent clashes, deaths, and widespread unrest linked to party activities.

The conflict, widely described as a supremacy battle within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), is believed to have spilled into the grassroots during ward congresses across the state. Political loyalists aligned with rival factions allegedly confronted one another, leading to violent attacks in several communities.

Reports indicate that the situation turned deadly in Odode-Idanre, headquarters of Idanre Local Government Area, where clashes during party congress activities left at least two people dead and several others injured. The violence was part of broader unrest across the state as the party conducted congresses in over 200 wards.

In some accounts, fatalities were higher, with multiple persons feared killed and several injured during factional confrontations. A relative of the state party chairman was also reportedly attacked and left in a coma after assailants mistook him for the party leader.

Political observers say the crisis reflects growing internal divisions over influence, leadership, and future political control in the state. The rivalry between the governor’s camp and supporters of the interior minister has reportedly intensified competition within the party, creating an atmosphere of tension and suspicion.

The violence has heightened security concerns in Ondo, with residents expressing fears that political disagreements are fueling instability at the grassroots level. Analysts warn that if not quickly addressed, the conflict could weaken party cohesion and further threaten public safety.

Authorities are yet to announce decisive measures to fully restore calm, though calls for restraint and dialogue among political stakeholders have intensified.
