South-South Stakeholders Raise Alarm Over Enforcement of Electoral Act
Stakeholders across Nigeriaâs South-South region have expressed deep concern over the enforcement of the Electoral Act, warning that certain interpretations and implementations could undermine democratic principles ahead of forthcoming elections.
The stakeholders, comprising political leaders, civil society organisations, youth groups and traditional rulers, made their position known at a regional consultative meeting held in Port Harcourt. They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to ensure strict neutrality, transparency and uniform application of the law across all states.
According to participants, inconsistent enforcement of provisions relating to candidate nomination, campaign finance, and party primaries could create confusion and legal disputes. They stressed that selective application of the law may disenfranchise voters and aspirants, particularly in politically sensitive states within the oil-rich region.
Some leaders also called on the National Assembly to clarify ambiguous sections of the Electoral Act to prevent misinterpretation by regulatory bodies and security agencies. They maintained that credible elections remain the foundation of peace and development in the South-South.
Civil society representatives appealed to security agencies to act professionally and avoid actions that could be perceived as intimidation during the electoral process. Youth groups at the meeting emphasized the need for voter education to reduce misinformation and build confidence in the system.
The meeting concluded with a communique urging dialogue between INEC, political parties and regional stakeholders to address concerns before the next electoral cycle. Observers say the development signals heightened political awareness in the South-South as preparations for future elections intensify.
