Makoko Demolition: Lagos State House of Assembly Seeks Two-Week Truce
The Lagos State House of Assembly has called for an immediate two-week suspension of the ongoing demolition exercise in Makoko, urging relevant authorities to allow room for dialogue and humane engagement with affected residents.
The Assemblyâs resolution followed growing tension in the waterfront community after reports of structures being pulled down as part of an environmental and urban planning enforcement drive. Lawmakers stressed the need to balance development control with the protection of citizensâ rights and livelihoods.
During plenary, members expressed concern over the social and economic implications of the demolition, noting that many families risk displacement without adequate notice or alternative shelter arrangements. The House subsequently mandated its committees on Physical Planning and Housing, as well as Waterfront Infrastructure Development, to interface with government agencies and community leaders within the two-week window.
Residents of Makoko, a densely populated coastal settlement, have appealed to the state government for reconsideration, insisting that many occupants possess valid tenancy arrangements and have lived in the area for decades.
In response, state officials maintained that the exercise targets illegal and environmentally hazardous structures, adding that enforcement actions are aimed at safeguarding lives and ensuring compliance with urban regulations.
The Assembly reiterated its commitment to finding a peaceful and lawful resolution, emphasizing that stakeholder engagement remains key to preventing unrest and preserving public confidence in governance.
