Israel–Iran Tensions: US Alerts Citizens in Nigeria as Shi’ite Protest Rocks Lagos.
The United States government has issued a global security alert for its citizens in Nigeria amid rising hostilities between the US, Israel and Iran following joint strikes that reportedly killed Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and other senior figures. The alert urges heightened vigilance due to the risk of spillover tensions affecting foreign nationals.
In Lagos, members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) — a Shi’ite Muslim group — staged a peaceful but vociferous protest through the Maryland area, expressing solidarity with Iran and condemning what they described as foreign aggression. Demonstrators carried placards and banners denouncing the attacks and lamented the reported deaths, with many chanting anti‑US and anti‑Israel slogans.
Similar protests have also taken place in other parts of the country, including Kano, Yobe, Gombe, Bauchi, Niger and Sokoto states, where participants marched holding Iranian flags and chants of support for Iran.
Security authorities in Nigeria have responded to these developments by putting police commands on heightened alert nationwide to prevent any exploitation of international tensions for domestic unrest. The Inspector‑General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed increased surveillance, intelligence gathering and tightened security around worship centres and public spaces, emphasizing that Nigeria should not become a theatre for foreign conflict.
Officials also note that protesters did not notify police ahead of demonstrations but underscored that the marches remained largely peaceful. Security forces have maintained a visible presence to ensure order and safety.
Political and diplomatic responses have also emerged:
- Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has publicly urged all parties involved in the Middle East crisis to exercise restraint and pursue dialogue to prevent further escalation with global implications.
- The Federal Government has issued advisories for Nigerians in Iran and neighboring Gulf countries to remain vigilant and limit non‑essential movements amid uncertainty.
The situation continues to evolve as international tensions unfold, prompting both local and foreign advisories aimed at safeguarding lives and preventing unrest linked to global geopolitical conflict.
