FCTA to Commence Strict Enforcement of Land Use and Ground Rent Compliance in Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has announced plans to begin strict enforcement of land use regulations and payment of ground rent across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

Officials of the administration said the move is aimed at improving compliance among property owners and ensuring that allottees meet their financial and legal obligations to the government. According to the FCTA, many property owners in the nation’s capital have failed to pay ground rent for several years, despite repeated notices.

The Director of Lands in the FCTA disclosed that enforcement will involve sealing properties, revoking land titles, and taking legal action against defaulters who fail to regularize their payments within the stipulated time. The administration stressed that ground rent payment is a statutory responsibility under the Land Use Act.

Authorities noted that the enforcement exercise will also target properties that violate approved land use plans, including structures converted from residential to commercial purposes without official approval.

The FCTA urged property owners and developers to immediately verify their land documents and settle outstanding ground rents to avoid sanctions. Officials emphasized that the enforcement drive is part of ongoing reforms aimed at improving urban planning, boosting internally generated revenue, and maintaining order in the capital city.

Residents and property owners in Abuja have therefore been advised to cooperate with the authorities and comply with all land administration regulations to prevent disruption to their properties or businesses.
