Peter Obi Says He Will Challenge 2026 Electoral Act in Court

Abuja, Nigeria – Former Labour Party presidential candidate and now African Democratic Congress (ADC) member Peter Obi has vowed to challenge the recently passed 2026 Electoral Act in court, warning that the new law could undermine the integrity of Nigeria’s upcoming polls.

Obi, who completed his party registration on Saturday in his hometown of Agulu, Anaocha Local Government Area of Anambra State, said the newly amended electoral law appears designed to tilt the electoral process in favour of the ruling party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing supporters at the flag‑off of ADC’s membership mobilisation drive, the former governor of Anambra State accused the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) of overstepping its constitutional mandate by involving itself in how political parties organise their internal affairs. He argued that INEC’s role is to conduct credible elections, not dictate how parties select their candidates.

Obi insisted that legal action is necessary to protect Nigeria’s democratic processes and ensure that the opposition has a level playing field. “I will challenge the decision in court,” he declared, asserting that some provisions in the law could facilitate electoral manipulation rather than promote transparency and fairness.

The ADC presidential hopeful has called on party members and grassroots supporters to intensify mobilisation efforts across the South‑East and beyond as part of a broader strategy to safeguard Nigeria’s electoral future and build a united front ahead of 2027 polls.
