Nigerian Senate Urges Telecom Firms to Install Masts in Attack-Prone Communities in Benue State
The Nigerian Senate has called on telecommunications companies operating in Nigeria to urgently install network masts in communities vulnerable to violent attacks in Benue State. Lawmakers said improved communication infrastructure would help residents alert security agencies quickly during emergencies and enhance surveillance in remote areas.
The Senate made the call during deliberations on the worsening security situation affecting several rural communities in Benue. According to the lawmakers, many villages lack reliable mobile network coverage, making it difficult for residents to contact security personnel or seek help when attacks occur.
Senators emphasized that the absence of telecommunications infrastructure in some parts of the state has contributed to delayed response from security agencies. They noted that installing telecom masts would significantly strengthen early warning systems and support efforts by security forces to respond swiftly to threats.
The lawmakers also urged the Federal Government and relevant regulatory agencies to collaborate with telecom operators to ensure rapid deployment of network infrastructure in high-risk areas. They stressed that improved connectivity would not only boost security but also enhance economic activities, education, and access to digital services in the affected communities.
Security experts and community leaders in Benue State have repeatedly called for better communication networks, arguing that reliable mobile coverage could help reduce casualties by enabling faster reporting of suspicious activities and attacks.
