Tinubu Mourns Victims as Atiku, Saraki, Amaechi, Kwankwaso Condemn Maiduguri Attacks

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep sorrow over the deadly attacks in Maiduguri, as prominent Nigerian political figures, including Atiku Abubakar, Bukola Saraki, Rotimi Amaechi, and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, strongly condemned the incident, describing it as tragic and unacceptable.

The coordinated attacks, which occurred on March 16, 2026, involved multiple explosions across key locations in Maiduguri, including busy markets and a hospital area. The blasts killed at least 23 people and left over 100 others injured, marking one of the most significant security breaches in the city after a period of relative calm.

In a statement, President Tinubu extended condolences to the families of the victims and the government of Borno State, assuring Nigerians that security agencies have been directed to intensify efforts to track down and bring the perpetrators to justice. He described the attacks as “cowardly” and reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to tackling terrorism and restoring peace in the North-East.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar also condemned the attacks, urging the federal government to adopt more decisive and proactive security strategies. He stressed that the continued loss of innocent lives underscores the urgent need for a comprehensive overhaul of Nigeria’s security architecture.

Similarly, former Senate President Bukola Saraki described the incident as heartbreaking, calling for unity and stronger collaboration among security agencies. He emphasized that protecting citizens must remain the government’s top priority.

Former Minister of Transportation Rotimi Amaechi expressed outrage over the killings, noting that such attacks threaten national stability and public confidence. He called on authorities to ensure that those responsible face swift justice.

On his part, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso decried the violence, urging increased vigilance and better intelligence gathering to prevent future occurrences. He also appealed to Nigerians to support security efforts through timely information sharing.

Security analysts believe the attacks bear the hallmarks of extremist groups operating in the region, with suspicion falling on insurgent elements linked to long-standing unrest in the North-East.

The incident has once again sparked national debate over Nigeria’s security challenges, with citizens and leaders alike calling for urgent and sustained action to curb the resurgence of violent attacks.
