2027 Gov Poll: Succession Firestorm Heats Up in 10 States

Lagos, Nigeria — Political succession battles ahead of the 2027 governorship elections are rapidly escalating in at least 10 Nigerian states, with party power dynamics, zoning disputes and aspirant realignments triggering intense jockeying for position well ahead of primaries and the general poll.

In Lagos State, the spotlight is on internal competition within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) as it seeks a successor to outgoing Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu. Local insiders say the real contest could be within the party’s primaries rather than between APC and opposition rivals, given decades of incumbent party dominance in the state.

Opposition parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Labour Party (LP) and the emerging African Democratic Congress (ADC), have declared a smattering of challengers, but analysts argue their impact remains muted compared to the ruling party’s deep structure.

In Oyo State, the succession debate is further complicated by zoning and religious considerations as the tenure of Governor Seyi Makinde winds down.
