Youths Storm Lagos Assembly Over Alleged Sexual Assault Case in Delta
Tension rose at the Lagos State House of Assembly on Monday as a group of aggrieved youths staged a protest over an alleged sexual assault incident reported in Delta State. The demonstrators, carrying placards and chanting solidarity songs, demanded swift justice for the victim and stricter enforcement of laws against sexual violence across the country.
The protesters, drawn from various civil society groups and youth organizations, accused authorities in Delta State of failing to act promptly on the matter. They called on the Lagos Assembly to use its legislative influence to pressure relevant agencies and ensure accountability.
Security operatives were deployed around the Assembly complex to maintain order as the protest remained largely peaceful. Some of the demonstrators attempted to submit a formal petition to lawmakers, urging collaboration between state governments to tackle rising cases of gender-based violence.
Speaking during the protest, one of the organizers stressed that the demonstration in Lagos was meant to amplify the victimâs voice and draw national attention to the issue. âJustice delayed is justice denied. We want immediate action,â he said.
Efforts to reach officials in Delta State for comments were ongoing at the time of filing this report. Meanwhile, rights advocates continue to push for comprehensive reforms and victim protection measures to curb sexual assault cases nationwide.
