2027: ADC, LP Leaders Advocate Southern Presidency Ticket
Middle Belt and Southern political figures from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and Labour Party (LP) are intensifying calls for the 2027 Nigerian presidential candidacy to come from the South, arguing it would promote national equity and stability.
Leaders in the coalition, including some from the Middle Belt chapter of ADC and factions of the LP, believe that zoning the ticket to the South would respect Nigeriaâs informal power rotation tradition, which has alternated leadership zones in past elections. They emphasise that inclusive rotation could enhance unity across diverse regions.
The Labour Party has formally zoned its 2027 presidential ticket to Southern Nigeria, effectively ruling out Northern aspirants within the party, a move that has sparked internal discussions and legal developments related to party leadership.
This push aligns with broader pressure from groups like the Southern and Middle Belt Leaders Forum, which has urged all major parties to consider a Southern flag bearer for the presidency, citing national cohesion concerns.
Igbo political leaders have also renewed their campaign for a presidency from the Southeast, highlighting ongoing regional activism around zoning ahead of the 2027 elections.
Opposition parties such as the ADC, composed partly through a coalition of major political figures, are positioning themselves as alternatives to the ruling party, emphasising change in leadership and regional representation in national governance.
