The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has dismissed as misleading a narrative circulating on social media, particularly a Facebook post it said distorted remarks made by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, regarding Operation Safe Corridor.

In a statement issued on Saturday, the Director of Defence Information, Major General Samaila Uba, said the viral post employed selective framing by amplifying certain phrases while ignoring the broader context of the CDS’s remarks.

According to the DHQ, the misleading narrative created a false impression that the Armed Forces of Nigeria prioritise leniency for terrorists over justice for victims.

“The portrayal is not only inaccurate but also harmful to ongoing national security efforts,” the statement said.

Operation Safe Corridor Not Amnesty Programme

Clarifying the intent of Operation Safe Corridor, the military stressed that the initiative is not an amnesty programme, as widely misrepresented.

Instead, it described the programme as a structured and carefully monitored process designed for the deradicalisation, rehabilitation, and reintegration of surrendered and screened low-risk former combatants.

The DHQ explained that participants undergo rigorous profiling and are admitted only after meeting strict criteria set by security agencies.

Military Reaffirms Commitment To Justice And Security

Reiterating its commitment to national security, the Armed Forces emphasized that its operations remain firmly focused on combating terrorism, protecting civilians, and ensuring justice for victims of insurgency.

The statement noted that efforts like Operation Safe Corridor complement kinetic military operations by addressing the root causes of extremism and reducing the likelihood of recidivism among former fighters.

Warning Against Misinformation

The DHQ also warned against the spread of misinformation, urging members of the public to verify information from credible sources before sharing content online.

It added that distorted narratives could undermine public trust and negatively impact the morale of troops engaged in critical operations across the country.

Conclusion

As Nigeria continues its fight against terrorism, the military called for public support and responsible communication, stressing that accurate information is essential in strengthening national unity and security efforts.
