Plateau Attacks: Implement Community Policing Now, Olajengbesi Urges FG

A legal practitioner and public affairs analyst, Pelumi Olajengbesi, has called on the Federal Government of Nigeria to urgently implement community policing as a lasting solution to the recurring attacks in Plateau State.

Olajengbesi made the call amid renewed violence in parts of Plateau, where several communities have come under deadly assaults by suspected armed groups, resulting in loss of lives and displacement of residents. He described the persistent insecurity as a national emergency requiring immediate, proactive, and localized responses.

According to him, the current centralized policing structure has proven insufficient in addressing security challenges, especially in rural and hard-to-reach areas. He stressed that community policing would empower local vigilantes, improve intelligence gathering, and foster trust between security agencies and residents.

“Security is most effective when it is community-driven. Locals understand their terrain and can easily identify strange movements. The Federal Government must decentralize policing to curb these senseless killings,” he said.

He further urged authorities to invest in modern surveillance technology, recruit more personnel into security agencies, and strengthen collaboration between the military, police, and local stakeholders.

The call comes as stakeholders, civil society organizations, and traditional leaders continue to express concern over the rising insecurity in Plateau and other parts of the country. Many have advocated structural reforms in Nigeria’s security architecture to address the root causes of violence, including land disputes, ethnic tensions, and weak law enforcement.

Residents of affected communities have also appealed for swift government intervention, noting that repeated attacks have disrupted livelihoods and heightened humanitarian challenges.

As the debate over state and community policing gains traction, analysts believe that political will and legislative backing will be crucial in translating such proposals into actionable policies.
