Aisha Yesufu Says Peter Obi Is Committed to One‑Term Presidency
Abuja, Nigeria — Prominent civil rights activist and African Democratic Congress (ADC) chieftain Aisha Yesufu has publicly reaffirmed that former presidential candidate Peter Obi committed to serving only a single term if elected president in 2027 — and vowed to oppose him fiercely should he seek a second term.
Speaking in an interview on Arise TV on Monday, Yesufu said she personally extracted the one‑term pledge from Obi after the 2023 election, insisting he meant what he said. According to her, Obi originally made the declaration in 2022 and reiterated it following the polls, stressing that his word and integrity were paramount.
“Yesufu stated that Obi described his aim as leaving a lasting national legacy rather than clinging to power,” noting he likened himself to leaders such as Nelson Mandela and Lee Kuan Yew in prioritising service over prolonged tenure.
The activist said part of her confidence in Obi’s promise lies in his belief that leaders unencumbered by re‑election pressures can make bolder, nationally beneficial decisions.
Yesufu’s comments echo earlier warnings she issued that she would oppose Obi if he reneged on the one‑term commitment — a stance she has maintained for months as Obi continues his political mobilisation within the ADC ahead of the 2027 polls.
Political analysts say Yesufu’s declaration underscores deeper tensions within opposition ranks over leadership ambitions and strategy, especially as Nigeria’s 2027 general election draws closer. Political watchers will be watching closely to see how Obi’s pledge shapes his campaign narrative and support base going forward.
