2027: Suspense as S’Court Delays PDP, ADC Verdict

The Supreme Court of Nigeria has heightened political tension after it reserved judgment in the leadership disputes involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the African Democratic Congress (ADC), leaving both parties uncertain ahead of the 2027 general elections.

A five-member panel of the apex court, after hearing arguments from rival factions and their legal teams, said the date for judgment would be communicated later. The cases centre on contested party leadership structures, legitimacy of national executives, and control over party operations.

The PDP matter stems from a deep internal crisis, with factions led by rival blocs challenging the validity of conventions, congresses, and national leadership claims. The ADC case also revolves around competing claims to party leadership and recognition by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

INEC’s electoral timetable adds urgency to the matter, with party primaries scheduled between April and May 2026, and general elections fixed for early 2027. The unresolved court decision has therefore raised fears of possible disruption to party preparations and candidate nominations.

Political observers say the outcome of the Supreme Court ruling could significantly reshape opposition politics, determine which factions gain legal recognition, and influence the balance of power ahead of the 2027 elections.
